The Rekord launched in the mid 1950s was a very popular and successful family car. Until 1977, several versions of the vehicle had already been introduced and the E series models that were introduced between 1977 and 82 were referred to as being generous passenger vehicles in terms of cargo volume as well as passenger comfort. With the ability to accommodate 5 passengers the vehicle still left 31 cubic feet of boot. The engine choices with the Caravans were narrow though as they comprised of only one diesel unit and two petrol units. The range of power output offered started from 65 hp for the diesel, 2.3 liter extending to 110 hp for the deluxe trim gasoline, 2.01 S. All the engines came coupled with 5 speed automatic transmission.

The Caravan 1982 version came with a uniquely styled flowing body shell along with a redesigned bumper, headlights and grille. New trims were also added t the line including Lexus replacing the Deluxe and a new power unit series. The gasoline 1.9 N type was sacked and a smaller but efficient 1.8 liter replaced it. The 2.3 Diesel and the 2.0 Petrol were kept with the later also being made available in turbo charger which offered improved power output of 86 hp. Some of the manual 5 speed transmissions were replaced by the 4 speed transmissions.
