Initially, the Freelander was supposed to be produced in partnership with another vehicle company but when no one seemed interested, Land Rover went ahead with the production of this car, which was given the code name of CB40. However, because of this reason, the first few models of this car had a lot of mechanical issues which included the failure of the clutch and the differential as well as blown head gaskets. It may seem unbelievable but the car eventually became Europe's best selling 4x4.

This particular version of this range was able to provide it with the right kind of edge. The first generation proved to be extremely disastrous since it was made in-house and without any kind of support from BMW, which by that time had bought this UK company. The new cars included new engines which included the 2.0 L4 MBW diesel engine along with the 2.5 Rover KV6. Another added feature included the gearboxes styled in a tiptronic style, which proved to be extremely efficient and popular with the V6 engine.

This car became so successful that by 2003, there was an urgent need for a facelift to the car. Initially, things were difficult because of the variety of different mechanical difficulties, but it was able to attract customers eventually. When the Rover and BMW engines were introduced in 2000 which led to the increasing of sales, but with this facelift, there were only changes to the visual, which included changes to the headlamps and the grille.
