Kia was able to break into the family sedan market through the mass production of Clarus, which was known as Credos in the home country. The car started selling in the summer of 1999 and it was based on Mazda 626's running gear. The car had an engine which was powered and fueled by two petrol engines from Mazda which included 1.8 liters and 2.0 liters. These were not too good when it came to performance but were excellent when it came to reliability. The fact that there was no diesel-powered alternative was a major disappointment. Furthermore, the car had a spacious interior, which was dull but comfortable along with the fact that there was plenty of storage space since the boot was massive.
