When the Mazda Premacy was highly successful, the small MPV market opened and for this reason Honda Stream was released into the market in its first generation. This car was based on the platform of the Civic Chassis, but it was 100 mm in length in addition. This was done so that a third row of seats could be added into the car. There were two options for the engines, which included a 1.7 D17 or a 2.0 K20. This could be fitted with either a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The Honda Stream first generation was redesigned in 2003 and introduced into the market. These modifications included a visual change, with the front and rear light clusters being changed. The signal lights were also changed into the color of amber. The front grille was redesigned, and the wheel design was also changed. For a better look, and a more glamorous appeal to the car, the bumpers were also redesigned.

The second version of the stream, which was released in 2006 came with two trim levels. The base level had a 1.8 litre single overhead engine, along with a 5-speed automatic speed transmission or a 5-speed manual gearbox, but this depended upon the country of origin. The luxurious trim level had a double 2.0 litre engine, along with CT transmission, that also featured a function for paddle shift.
