In order to replace both the Ford Taunus and the Ford Cortina models, there was a model built by the European branch of the Ford company namely as the Sierra. The unappealing design of this model was treated as the major default and it made the car unpopular and got the lowest sales figures and hence it was not able to attain the level of the Taunus and Cortina models. This car was designed as very aerodynamic one along with hatch as opting for the Aeroback design. In the later years, the styling of the Sierra overcame the appearance of the famous Taurus model.

When you consider about the 3-door hatch version of this car, there were two versions available including the one with two pillars at the rear of the door and the other one with the option of just one pillar. This car was also marketed outside the Europe including the countries such as North America, South Africa, South America and New Zealand, where this model was known as the Merkur Xr4Ti.

Line-up of the Ford Sierra was completed along with the 3-door hatch, the 5-door hatch and the sedan version, which were treated as the models designed in order to replace the aging Taunus and Cortina. Even though some of the people treated this model as the weak one, it was the model with efficient design of its time. Because of the very aerodynamic design, the Sierra model was stayed as unchanged one for quite, even most of the manufacturers preferred to go for a struggle in order to achieve the same look.
