Launched in the fall of 1989 as 1990 models, the Pontiac Trans Sport along with its siblings, including Oldsmobile Silhouette and Chevrolet Lumina LPV had radical styling. In Europe, until 2005, there was a Chevrolet Venture, which was sold as Chevrolet Trans Sport, because it had some features that were similar to Pontiac Trans Sport.

General Motors introduced the Trans Sport and its sibling cars to compete with Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan. These minivans were able to capture a huge chunk of the market, because of their significant market share. However, the GMC Safari and Chevrolet Astro, which were larger mini-vans were not as successful in getting the market away from Chrysler, which previously dominant in the minivan market in the late 1980s.
