The Audi S5 was launched simultaneously with the A5 model and resembling the RS and S models of Audi, the S5 too received a stronger look and tended engine power. The athletic versions of the A5 also received changes of chrome finished exhaust, daytime LED running lights, and redesigning of the rear spoiler. Ready to compete the Mercedes CLK 500 and the BMW 335Ciin the premium coupe range, the new S5 used the Volkswagen C4 platform providing an enhanced weight distribution system using the engine unit of the FSI 4.2 liter V8 placed at the rear of the front axle. This arranging of the engine in the vehicle landed out better handling besides dealing with the torque steer problem commonly faced by Audi previously in it's A4/S4 and A6/S6 range.

The S5 Coupe by Audi contains a TFSI V6 3.0 litre supercharged engine producing 245 kW,a unit that had been used in the S5 Cabriolet and the S4 Avant/Sedan model of 2010. Other changes beneath the hood included better fuel efficiency through stop start technology. The fuel efficiency claimed by Audi gives an economy of 8.9 litres per 100 km besides the 12.6 litres per 100 km for the Coupe V8 and 10.7 litres per 100 km for the cabriolet. The German automaker lists S5 as a single frame vehicle though there is no mention of the reason of doing so, whether it is to enhance its performance or whether the car frame is of aluminum or traditional steel made is also not clear. S5 in the wake of a mid regeneration underwent some serious front overhauling receiving a redesigning in the model's headlights using DRL's, new fog lamps, and new grille similar to 2012 Audi A6. A new rear diffuser is also placed in the model which is better looking than the one on the earlier models.
