Audi Reveals A3 e-tron Plug-in Hybrid for Geneva Motor Show
As a part of Audi's e-tron initiative, the German car company has decided to give the public a preview of the latest version from it's the third-generation A3 in the early March motor show in Geneva.
The A3 e-tron Plug-in Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid with 201-hp. The goal of the e-tron initiative by Audi is to present a recently developed Audi hybrid along with all-electric powertrains at such reasonable prices that compared to the conventional powertrains they seem to be the most pragmatic option.
Audi claims that the innovative A3 e-tron Plug-in Hybrid is a glance at the future of cars and that this modern hybrid could definitely play a major role in the approach of the brand. Audi had declared that it's formerly designed A1 and R8 sports car e-tron versions would not be manufactured but, with its novel A3 e-tron hybrid Audi is more optimistic, claiming that it is undoubtedly what the cars of tomorrow should symbolize i.e. efficient cars that drive well, models that keep up with the modern trends and most importantly are planet friendly.
The modern drivetrain can run in three modes which are namely electric motor only, engine only and combined mode. It is said that in the electric mode possesses 31 miles of maximal range and can reach a maximum speed of 81 mph.
The EA211 engine of Volkswagen has been modified to make the 148hp engine of the A3 hatchback. A horsepower of 101 can be attained in combination with the electric motor in front of the car's gearbox. It has a 1.4 litre direct injection gasoline unit.
The maximum system output for the modern A3 e-tron is of 201hp and the maximum torque is 258 lb-ft - figures which surpasses the output of the latest turbocharged A3 1.8 TFSI which only has a torque of 74 lb-ft and 24 hp. The fact that the A3 e-tron has a greater output than that of the direct injection engine with four cylinders of the A3 1.8 TFSI is because the electric motor and the engine of the A3 e-tron combine to yield this impressive output.
However, Audi is yet to verify when the mass production of the A3 e-tron is to begin. Nevertheless certain sources from Audi's own Ingolstadt, Germany HQ have informed Autoweek that limited production run for the sake of in-house testing has been planned.
