Initially the Audi Coupe was built on the Audi 80 B2 platform and was introduced to the world in 1981. The majority of its components resembled the 1980 Audi launch, the Quattro along with its "Quattro" four wheel drive system and its bodywork. The Audi Coupe saw its initial design change in 1984 where it was given a brand new rear and front bumpers, new tail lights and new headlights. The Audi Coupe's production was halted in 1988 and a year later the B3 bases new Audi Coupe was set to take its place.

The new Audi Coupe after its introduction 1989 underwent its first main design change in 1991 when it was introduced with a new B4 platform. Among the new design were new rear and front bumpers, a longer wheelbase and a redesigned Audi front grille. The model was made available with a variety of diesel and petrol based engines with the petrol units equipped with the "Quattro" system of four wheel drive. The model's manufacturing was stopped in 1996 with Audi Cabriolet and was replaced by the TT Coupe two years later.
